Since the foundation of the Principality of Poljica, Podgrađe was called "Cheek of Poljica" and "Head of Poljica" for an obvious reason - because of its position on the eastern border of the ancient Principality of Poljica and the border was always the Cetina river. Podgrađe is washed by this river from the north, east and south.

Podgrađe was named after its position on the foot of the ruins of Ilirska Gradina, which was called "Građe" in the old times. It was built on a hill Gradac and though it is not very high, it  dominates the whole landscape and offers a fscinating view on the whole scenery (if you happen to see a wild rubbish heap, consider it to be a mirage), dating from the 3rd century BC and was built by the tribe Dalmati under the reign of the legendary queen Teuta to protect the area from the Roman invasion ...

Podgrađe

Podgrađe was named after its position on the foot of the ruins of Ilirska Gradina, which was called "Građe" in the old times. It was built on a hill Gradac and though it is not very high, it  dominates the whole landscape and offers a fscinating view on the whole scenery (if you happen to see a wild rubbish heap, consider it to be a mirage), dating from the 3rd century BC and was built by the tribe Dalmati under the reign of the legendary queen Teuta to protect the area from the Roman invasion.

Inspite of the long-lasting fights and tough resistance of the tribe Dalmati, the Romans came to power in the first century BC and their rule  lasted till  Croats arrived in these regions. When they came, they assimilated nature and people, they had found there (Illyrians and Latins) and they fitted it all into the nature, river and stone, making it into one body and one spirit. No archeological examinations have ever been done in Podgrađe, so it cannot be guaranteed when people started to live on this area. There have been some suppositions  that the first people lived on the bank of the Cetina river in Neolithic. Since that time people have been living here all the time, which can be seen from random findings, kept in private collections or from those lying forgotten somewhwere in an attic.

South slopes of the canyon where today's Podgrađe is placed, are getting down like stairs to the Cetina river. Everything has been cultivated for centuries. Main ways were leading over Zadvarje and the saddle Dubci, connecting Bosnia with Dalmatian coast and further with other parts of the world. Passengers passing that way would always admire the land, the labourers from Podgrađe used to cultivate.

There is an old mill, built in the 16th century and all the local families (16 of them)  took part in its building. So the property was divided into 16 parts, which means that the owners of the mill and the millers were all of them - equal number of days in the year. The mill stopped working in 1970 when the water for the needs of hidro-plant Zakučac was stolen from Cetina, so it started falling to ruins. Now reconstruction of the old mill has started  (ŠRD "Podgrađe" from Podgrađe, supported by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the town of Omiš and other supporters). But, people still haven't managed to get enough money to make a total reconstruction and start a new life for the old mill, which is the symbol of co-operation and living together of people of good will.

On the bank of the  river there have been ruins of a monastry dating from Middle ages, which are now covered with thick alluvions of soil.

On the eastern side there is a deep canyon, there are places where it's 150 m deep, the waterfalls "Velika and Mala Gubavica", as well as the lake "Crni kotao", which separated Podgrađe and  the Principality of Poljica from Zadvarje and the Turkish Empire. From there  you can come down to the canyon, going down an old path, cut into the sheer rocks.

On the northern side there are remains  of old  housings, where our ancestors lived, mainly because the place was close to the river. It was difficult to reach for various invaders, attacking these areas through history and housings were abandoned when the Turks were expelled from this region or when their rule failed.

The canyon separates Podgrađe from Katuni and Kreševo and the old-Croatian parish"Radobilje" , which existed in the past. Once it connected them over the place called "Mostinje", when they had to buy or sell their goods or make a free flow of people and ideas possible. The government at that time used to forbid it or put very strong rules which were just opposite to the customs and the way of living of free people, dwelling on the banks of the Cetina river.
