The town of Omiš is placed at the very mouth of the Cetina river, some 25 km south from Split. The old town heart and the new part are connected with a bridge. The town is surrounded by sheer rocks and sea. Omiš is well known for its pirat history, which can be easily noticed even today, at the first sight.

Namely, over the old town there is a Romanesque fortification "Mirabella", dating from the 12th century. On the 245 m high mountain over the town there are remains of the old fortification "Starigrad".

Since the foundation of the Principality of Poljica, Podgrađe was called "Cheek of Poljica" and "Head of Poljica" for an obvious reason - because of its position on the eastern border of the ancient Principality of Poljica and the border was always the Cetina river. Podgrađe is washed by this river from the north, east and south.

Podgrađe was named after its position on the foot of the ruins of Ilirska Gradina, which was called "Građe" in the old times. It was built on a hill Gradac and though it is not very high, it  dominates the whole landscape and offers a fscinating view on the whole scenery (if you happen to see a wild rubbish heap, consider it to be a mirage), dating from the 3rd century BC and was built by the tribe Dalmati under the reign of the legendary queen Teuta to protect the area from the Roman invasion ...

River Cetina PDF Print E-mail

This beauty takes rise from the five strong karst wells on 380 m of  sea-level height, at the foot of Dinara mountain (1831 m) and Gnjat (1801 m), a few kilometres north from Vrlika. From there it flows south-east through the field of Sinj and Trilj to Zadvarje, then it flows west, before the very mouth and the town of Omiš. There it flows to the Adriatic sea, flowing to the south.

With its 100 km, the Cetina river is the longest Dalmatian river and the waterfall "Gubavica" (48 m) on the foot of Zadvarje is one of the largest in Croatia. During the summer Cetina has a very small flow - which means 2-4 m3/sec. and is caused by accumulation and turning the water through tunnels due to water-power needs. During the rainy season when energetic needs are maximally fulfilled, the flow rises at a great degree.

ImageTourist agency "Jut" was founded to make tourism the main force and a financial source of ecological projects and protection of various cultural monuments, that can be found everywhere. Namely, people have been living in these areas since the younger stone age.

Since its foundation tourist agency "Jut" accepts Nature as its partner in everything it does. 20% of the means it earns is being paid to the account of "Nature protection association - Omiš". From that source different ecological actions to protect natural wealth have been supported.
